Steadicam/Back Problems Question?

I recently got offered a part time job as a videographer for an independent company. This is a great opportunity for me. However it requires me to use a Steadicam, which is about 40ish lbs in all (with the camera on it and all)…

I had a spinal fusion for scoliosis in my lower lumbar when I was around 14, then when I was 21 I broke my back in the mid-area (T-10 or 11 for those of you who know biological specifics).

I know people with back problems should be careful opperating a steadicam, but I consider myself healthy. I do yoga and other simular things to maintain my health and strength.

I really wanna give it a shot! Should this be safe? I am 24, young female in decent health… I work out, eat well, have had back problems in the past but I think I can do it…

The job is probably safe. Think about the following, though.

Is it something you can rest on the ground or do you have to hold the Steadicam? If you have to hold it, is it on your shoulder or in your arms?

When I was fused, I was told that 40lbs is the max I should carry. Of course, I was 39 when I had the first fusion.

I’d give your surgeon a call and ask how much weight you can handle. I’d also go to the company and try working with the camera for a day or two (a job test drive, so to speak) and see if you’re physically capable of doing the job.
